about

Attention! This audio recording was made using binaural mixing, so it is recommended to listen to it in headphones.

This project is an ambisonic reconstruction of A.Avraamov's «The Symphony of steam whistles», which was performed in Moscow on November 7th, 1923. In all editions of "The Symphony of steam whistles" was conceived and carried out as a sound design of revolutionary festivals on the scale of the whole city. «The Symphony of steam whistles" is a bright example of syncretic festive «action» peculiar to the first post-revolutionary years.
The Moscow performance of "Symphony" is recreating for the first time, in contrast to the Baku one, which was repeatedly reconstructed due to the well-preserved "Order on the Symphony of steam whistles", 1922. The basis of the reconstruction are information from the November editions of the newspapers "Izvestia" and "Pravda", 1923, and eyewitnesses' reviews, later published in the press and memoirs. Originally known were the location of the main sources of sound (“Magistral”, artillery, stations and factories), the time of the beginning of the performance and the time of repetition of the performance (which was chosen for the initial point of the beginning), part of the preserved score for the opening "fanfare" and the musical structure of "Symphony".
